Central Question: What factors impact biodiversity on islands?

Guiding Thought Question: What factor do you think is going to have biggest effect on the biodiversity of an island? Why will that factor have such a large effect?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about isolation, area, and equilibrium theories as they relate to island biogeography by examining case-studies in a map activity and the biodiversity of Iceland.

How the different species got there or were dispersed. It has a large effect because it is what created the island and makes the island alive.

The climate of the island is a big factor of biodiversity. If the island is colder or has a higher elevation there will be less biodiversity than an island with warm climate. This is similar to the species energy theory.

climate change. because animals on islands are typically so adapted to there island to the point where they cant go anywhere else, climate change could potentially reconfigure the biograpghy.

Not enough food cause if there isn’t enough food for one animal it leads to having no food for all animals and they’ll slowly die off

I think the climate is going to have the biggest impact. What animals and plants are going to be there are influenced by the climate

Climate change is probably one of the biggest factors in biodiversity, like animals that are adapted to an island, the sudden change won't let them have time to leave or adapt.

If something happens that kills off a lot of animals so then the island becomes more evolved from the event. Then the diversity is less cause there aren’t as many species.

I think resource availability will have the biggest effect on biodiversity. Animals tend to expand into certain niches when there are resources/prey available that are not being competed for. Take this away and there will be less changing into various niches (adaptation), resulting in less biodiversity.

climate change has the biggest impact because it is destroying natural ecosystems and making the sea levels rise which can make islands be covered with water.

The biggest factor will be the distance from that island to the mainland because that will impact how many species will be able to make it to the island to then diversify into different species. I think the biggest factor would be the climate of the environment. Plants and animals on islands are specialized to their island, and if you change that, they might not be able to adapt.

Climate change, warmer climates will have more biodiversity because of the species energy theory, but if the climate rises in a colder area, the animals/plants may die off due to not being able to adapt

I think climate change will effect the islands' biodiversity because there is no way for any species to survive in their habitat unless they adapt, which isn't always possible.

I think the factor that will effect the biodiversity of an island will be resources, because if there is not enough resources there will not be enough to support a large population.

Climate will have a big effect on biodiversity because the species must change and adapt to survive.

The amount of resources will have the biggest effect on biodiversity because there will be a smaller range of species that can survive.
