Forum 1.7 - Act Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

Central Question: Why is an understanding of human forces necessary in ecology?

Guiding Thought Question: In terms of trying to protect and restore biological areas is it better to have humans actively involved in the process or to have the environment correct itself naturally? At What point should humans get involved?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will discuss the factors that influence the extinction of species as connected to the increase in global warming and look at how humans can have positive and negative effects on the environment.

Most of the time it would be better for humans to stay out and let the environment and let it heal by itself but I think there are some cases where humans should intervene, namely where they did huge changes to the environment. Such as places where humans drove a species out, humans should then put the animal back in, like how they put wolves back in Yellowstone.

If it isn't too far gone, we should leave the environment to correct itself. However, if humans have gone too far, like removing a whole species from the environment or depleting the environment of all its resources.

Human's should only help if the enviroment is far too gone, but if it's not as bad, let nature correct and fix itself!

We could help a little bit, but there's some things that need to correct themself's.

Humans should get involved when the things we do are affecting the environment, we should then be part of the solution.

I think humans should be involved in reversing the damage they caused. Some things would be solved a lot faster if humans were involved like growing wild population and cleaning up pollution.

I think if it is more minor then we should let the environment fix itself but if it’s very drastic then people should come in and help.

It is better to let nature perform its natural processes of healing but because of humans, some regions are harmed beyond natural repair. In those cases, humans have to interfere before the damage becomes irreversible (like the gigantic California fires.)

The things that we have already impacted so much and need or help to correct we should do that but some things it’s better if we leave it to do it own thing.

The environment is beyond helping itself. Human should restore as much of the environment to the best extent they can if at all possible.

I think it depends on the circumstances. If possible, I think it's better for the land to correct itself naturally. I think humans should get involved after humans are already involved... if that makes sense. If humans are the reason for the damage, humans are probably necessary to help solve the problem.

I think that humans should fix the issue because they are the ones who caused the problem.

If it is something that is too extreme that the environment can't fix itself then humans should intervene, but otherwise the environment should be left alone.

Humans should be apart of the solution for the issue humans create. The environment should correct itself from natural occurring situations.

Humans shouldn’t be a part of the environment and it should just heal itself, but if we do damage that it is impossible to heal itself from, then we should step in to help

People should get involved if the environment is incapable of repairing itself. We can help start the process of the environment healing but the less we are involved the better.

I think humans should help when something has gone too far because of us. For example, invasive species.

I think that people should fix the ecosystem because they broke it.

Humans should get involved if it is there fault that the environment is the way it is and that is most cases. Humans should help restore the building blocks of the ecosystem such as planting plants or returning animals like wolves but then should step back and observe the progress.

When humans are a big cause in the reason the environment is destroyed, they should help restore it. I think that with things like boats putting invasive species into waters we have more of a responsibility than like controlled wildfires since those can help the plants.I think when the wildfires get out of control we should step in.

i think humans should not directly try to restore the ecosystem, but aid nature into doing it its own way

In worse environments I do believe humans should help out with a better change because nature takes a while to correct itself.
