Forum 2.4 - Adapt, Or Else??

2/21/2019

Central Question: How have species evolved to better survive in the harsh conditions of a desert?

Guiding Thought Question: Why is the idea of "survival of the fittest" so especially relevant in the world's hot deserts? Provide an example to support your argument.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about plant and animal adaptations to hot dry climates by observing adaptations by species and presenting information about those species to their fellow classmates.

Only those that are adapted to the low precipitation levels will survive. You can't expect a fish to survive in the sand/soil/etc. They need to adapt to be able to survive in that new environment.

The only organisms that survive in the desert are the ones that can survive in the heat and the dry meaning that only the animals that can survive the conditions and the other predators are the ones to survive.

i think the idea of survival of the fittest is very relavent to teh deserts because not only do you have to be fit against predators, you have to be fit against the environment, the lack of water and the heat.

Only the animals adapted to live in the hot climates of the desert will live, but when we see bones in a desert we say survival of the fittest because only the strongest most adapted are able to get through living in harsh climates. For example the desert tortoise is the most endangered animal in the desert because they aren’t able to adapt.

to fit their enviroment to thrive.

I think it’s so relevant because it’s hard to survive in the heat/dryness but also against the predators.

Survival of the fittest can be applied to the desert because only animals adapted to the hot and dry climate can survive and be the best predator

Animals and plants that adapt to the lower amounts of precipitation and higher temperatures will survive. For example: cacti

Only the animals that are best suited for the desert will survive. Animals that can't will eventually die out leaving only the ones best suited.

The desert is such an extreme environment that it's super selective on who can survive. An example would be with a polar bear. They're equipped to survive in super cold temperatures, and they would not be able to survive in the desert.

Certain animal and plant species are adapted for such hot and dry climates; they have special characteristics that other species won't have. For example, a Snowy Owl wouldn't be able to adapt like a Burrow Owl, for Snowy Owl's have white feathers and is made for drastic cold winds and weather.

The desert has limited resources, so only the strongest and most adaptable can survive.

Survival of the fittest is very relevant in deserts because there is a limited supply of water. Only the species with a good way to store water or reduce water leaving the body will be able to thrive.

Because in the dessert the temps are extreme so the animals that are able to live in those conditions are the ones that survive. Like if a bug can survive in the hot day but they might freeze over night

Deserts require a specific set of adaptations to be able to live in them. Only the species best adapt to the harsh conditions will survive.

There is more competition for food and adapting to the higher and lower temperatures.

It is relevant because the need certain skills to survive in this desert environment, like the ability to survive without water.

Survival of the fittest is important in the desert because if you are not adapted you will not survive. Like the African Spurr tortiose, they have a lot of adaptations to survive in hot and dry environments.

Because animals that the BEST suited live. Because the climate is so harsh. The plants that live in the desert are only found in the desert because they are so adapted to the climate they live in.

Survival of the fittest is so relevant In the hottest deserts because it is such a harsh environment, only the most efficient and well adapted to the environment are going to survive. An individual with of a species with thicker fur and smaller appendages is going to have a much harder time surviving the the desert than a member of the same species with thinner fur and larger appendages.
