Forum 1.1 - Knowing the Ropes

8/21/2017

Guiding Thought Question: For the first day's forum write your general feelings about government. Explain your feelings and what types of things have influenced your perceptions.
NOTE: This is not a time to bash the current, or a former,                  administration or particular government officials.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will gain an understanding of the procedures and expectations of the course, and be able to interact with the course materials that they will be using throughout the course of the semester. Students will go on a walking tour to explore the concepts of the course and how they are visible in their everyday surroundings.

Central Question: What is conservation and how do different forms of government get involved?

I think the government is both good and bad. Governments can help keep order in society, but they can also become corrupt.

Govt can be a good thing! There’s many examples of good governments and good systems! Govt should be working to achieve the best quality of life for its people. Unfortunately that’s not how it always is, and big powerful officials tend to forgot that

I am very excited to learn about government. I've always really enjoyed history and social studies and bringing in the environment tops the cake. I would never be able to take a class like this at my regular school.

I'm generally skeptical of government. I realize that there are good people trying to do good things, but overall I don't have a lot of faith in the system.

I have strong political beliefs but don't really know much about the government itself. I have opinions on the people involved in the government but not much about the government as a whole.

My general feelings towards the government is that it’s in place to maintain the laws and keep society running. Without the government there would be a lack of order.

Government is good, its supposed to help keep citizens in line. Governments are in place for a reason, though some countries follow their own paths.

Lately I have had mixed feelings about the government and its mostly been affected by the stuff I've seen on the media and on different social media platforms. I realize that there are good and bad things about most things but because of the overwhelming information that's constantly releasing I just chose not to think one way or another about it.

government is a really broad subject. if we’re talking about u.s. government than it’s core foundation is to be for the people and work to have everyone’s best interest. however it’s hard for this to happen because power almost always corrupts people. i’m excited to learn a lot more about it though

The government is supposed to oversee power distribution in a country. I believe that this can be helpful, but also done wrong can be very damaging.

The government itself is fine, it's just the concert clowns that are running the place that are dumpster fires of humans. I know the media is manipulating information too skew everyones bias, but at the same time we can't just completely ignore what they say because sometimes they aren't right.

I think government, as the broad subject, is a really interesting subject to learn about and study. Generally I want the overarching government of any given state to have the best interests of its citizens in mind when making decisions. People’s opinions on what is the ‘best form’ of government vary with every individual, but it’s important that any disagreement over the subject are civil.

I feel government sounds magnificent in theory, however, it's execution can easily be corrupted. I do believe some form of government is required for all civilizations, I just don't think any single one of them perfected a form of government. People have very polarized views which makes it difficult please everyone with policies, resulting in trade offs and the stalling of policies being passed by congress.

I don’t have a ton of super developed feeling about the government yet, because I have only recently ( like in the past year) started paying more attention to the news and politics. I know that the government is supposed make laws in the public’s best interest, but there is a lot of controversy about this. This is generally because people have different opinions of what is in everyone’s best interest.

Not every government is perfect, and there is always room for improvement. As a citizen under a democratic government I prefer it over others that I have heard of. This doesn't mean I think it's perfect, because there are multiple things that need fixing. My perception of government in general is that it is there to control the people and make sure there isn't to much chaos among the people and society.

So, to my understanding, a government is essentially an organization that discerns a region or nation about what they can or cannot do, along with a select other decisions. I feel they are supposed to bring about sanity into society, and make decisions that are supposed to protect their citizens

I feel like governments are supposed to cater to their people's needs. No government is perfect and will always need to change according to peoples wants/needs. Governments aren't supposed to be stable 100% of the time, there needs to be quarrels and debates to figure out what works best with their country.
