Guiding Thought Question: Why is it a disservice to only talk about the native peoples of the Americas in a historical context? Why is it important to incorporate the current perspectives of American Indians? Why is the input of Native Americans important in making decisions that impact the environment?

Central Question: How does the role of Tribal Governance differ and how do their views on Environmental conservation compare to those of the State and Federal governments?(HS.1.1.d, HS.1.2.a, HS.1.2.d)

Native American history is important but it does them a disservice to not address the current population. The importance of the current Natives is there entirely different perspective on historic events as well as knowledge on the history of the American continents before white people. These people also value the environment to a degree that most others cannot achieve and their opinion often influences decisions in regards to those areas.

It is important to talk about indigenous people in the present and not just a historical sense because we are still very real, these cultures still exist and are still alive today, and natives are still misstreated. Only talking about them historically erases both the culture, and the struggle so many tribes are facing

It's a disservice because native Americans are still here, they haven't disappeared off the face of the earth. It's important to include their perspective because they also live in the state's and their history d culture coincides with the environment. They know how to work with it and live with it. Everyone's voices and opinions should matter.

It's a disservice because they are still alive and being affected by current issues, so they should be allowed input. They live off of the land more than other cultures, so changes to the environment affect them drastically.

Native people still exist and still have an impact on the political and social climate. They are also are super underrepresented. So incorporating and representing native Americans in modern history is very important.

It's not fair to talk about Native Americans in a historical context because they are still facing unfair treatment from the United States government. It's important to incorporate their perspective with the decisions we make because a lot of them affect the Native Americans greatly.

Its important to recognize the current American Indians because they are at the forefront of environmental effects and they value the wilderness greatly. We have to talk about indigenous people, not in a historical context because they are still around till this day, not just in the past.

Because native people still exist. They are not a thing of the past and it is disrespectful to talk about them in that way.

It's important to include Native Americans because they are still citizens of the united states and not just a historical group. They live off the land and deserve the same respect as every other citizen.

Because they arent just historical figures in the past, tribes still exist today and their opinions matter because they are citizens of the United States. The native Americans input is important because they own protected environments and their opinions matter since they are citizens of the US.

They need to be talked about in the present because they still exist and are still affected by the decisions that are made. They have a view point unlike anyone else so we should listen to them, because we will never understand it the same way they do.

Native Americans should be talked about in both historical and current content because their cultural impact and perspectives are still very relevant in todays society. It is important to include Native American perspective into current issues, especially environmental issues because they offer a different perspective on issues that affect them first hand.

Speaking to them only in historical context basically locks them in the past, and takes away focus from modern day problems that the natives still face. It would be like only referencing Spain in the past tense so people only know about what Spain did, not what Spain is doing or how they're doing.

It is a disservice to refer to them in a historical context because it is greatly misinformed. To not acknowledge their existence in today’s society is extremely damaging because they are a big portion of our community. The Native American communities tend to be one of the communities that puts the most effort into environmental issues. Their input is important because they have the environment’s best interests in mind and they have a bigger voice than politicians want to give them credit for.

It's important because they are still here. They are talked about like they don't exist or matter anymore.

Because they are still active and important to stuff today. They have been on this land the longest and “appreciate” it more than others. Well their input matters because they live here, period.

Native American people should be talked about in a non historical context, because they still exist and are still effected by many environmental issues, and should be talked about as such. They should have an active role in the environment because their lands should be protected, and they need to help the government make laws to protect them. They also have a personal connection to the land, so they have a unique perspective from the government.

It’s important to ask the current people now because they are the ones who are living now. I’m sure they have different views than the people from hundreds of years ago. It’s important to hear what they say because they are the ones living in it, just like everyone else. They should have just as much say in what happens to the environment as other people do.

As hard as the colonizers tried, Native Americans and their culture are still present today. We have to start teaching history in a way that highlights the continuity of these people throughout all of history into the modern day. If people are taught these cultures are a thing of the past, they won't be as educated in assuring indigenous people receive fair treatment in modern legislative decisions and cultural respect.

If we only focus on what has happened to the Indigenous people of Northern America and don't talk about how we can try to help them currently with what has happened and is still happening to them, then we are not educating people on the real start of our society here, both the light and the dark sides of it and we will only repeat history by being ignorant, wether on purpose or not.

It’s important to talk about Native people in present context because they are still people, who are still a major part of modern society. There is a trend of people viewing experiences of Native people as strictly historical, ignoring their present experiences. The importance of Native voices in context of the environment are prevalent because they are people living and caring for the land they’re living on.

It's a disservice because those religions and cultures are still alive and around today, but the U.S. government pretends like they're not even there. Many people still believe today that most native groups died out, this is because of lack of representation of these Native people within the government.

They are still here, they havent disappeared or left. Learning about them in only a historical sense makes people disassociate from them and it makes it hard to think of them in present day context.

Most of the time the Native American history has been mostly cast aside as a legend or a folk tale...The problem with this is that their community is still vastly large and they still do exist among us, they are not just simply a story to tell cause they' e grown with the country as the country has grew. Mostly they are forgotten about and lost
