Forum 1.3 - Practical Experience

1/10/2019

Guiding Thought Question: When trying to better understand the social behavior of a group, whose insights would you seek? That of a native to the group or the insights of a researcher? What are the positives and negatives of each perspective?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine the ways in which sociological can be used to better human society by examining examples of prior sociologists and exploring current trends in human study.

well a native to the group may be more informed but also offer biased observations, while an outside observer may be less informed but offer unbiased observations

I would seek the native because a researcher will only give you facts and information, while the native will tell you the history and the things that the researcher may not know because the researcher may not have been born there.

native know about whats going on around them but normally not a lot and researchers pay attention to certain things.

The person that is part of the group has a different view of the rest of the group then the person watching. The person in the group knows what is normal so they see some thing that are normal but are really seen as normal.

I would seek insights from the researcher cause they may be able to classify different behaviors better than an insider. Pros of seeking a native is that they can see everything.

I would go with the guidance of natives because researchers could be there for months or years and natives have been there all their life and know more about the traditions and cultures.

A native has the experience with living in that culture and can hopefully well articulate the minutiae of life in that culture, but a trained researcher can draw insightful comparisons from a scientifically-trained background.

A native in the group would offer more information and build a better idea of what is happening and why, while a researcher can provide what but not necessarily a why. Though a native can have a bias, I think they are a better source than a researcher

I definitely think that you'd want to interact with someone native to that culture because I feel like there's a difference between studying a culture and living in it for most of your life.

I would seek the insights of someone who is native to the group because they have a better understanding of the things that occur.
