Guiding Inquiry: Is the United Nations an appropriate agency to tackle environmental conservation? (3.2.c, 3.4.b, 3.4.c)

Guiding Thought Question: Is it necessary for all countries to be unified in the common goal of environmental protection or can individual countries choose not to and still accomplish the objectives? Explain your answer

Today's Learning Objective: Students will debate the merits of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals as a means to better understand them and see how they are applied across the world.

I think that countries need to be unified as a whole in order to get the best outcome for environmental protection but if an idividual country chose not to join I think the adjectives would be met just they would just not be as beneficial to the world. I think individuals can join together but also have seperate adjectives based on the environment around them

Yes, The climate is a worldwide thing and needs a worldwide effort to prevent further damage.

It doesn't need to be necessary but It would help because if everyone is working towards the same common goal and one country is struggling others could help or if a country is just not doing anything the rest of the world could keep them in check.

overall , it’s pretty important that all countries stand unified In a common goal of environmental betterment. However the goals and requirements for each country need to be different and based on their current waste, pollution levels, and land quality.

I think that countries do need to come to together to reach a common goal. We all live on the same planet and we all need to come together to help restore it.

I think it would be helpful for countries to have a common goal in environmental protection, but maybe not necessary.

It’s not necessary for all countries to be unified, but it can be more motivational.

No, the only use for becoming an unified nation thus far is mere suggestions and requests the actual actions of any form of worldwide organization/government is performed by the countries individually depending on their own goals. All that needs to occur is the persuasion of each country that the maintenance of the climate should be their goal and watch them do their best to attain that goal.

It is not necessary for countries to be unified on the common goal of environmental protection, but if all of them are going towards the same goal more should get done in regards to protecting the environment.

I mean the same policies wont work for everyone, but it is necessary for every country to have the environment in mind.

I think that everyone should be unified for the best outcome, but if people aren't they can still achieve their own goals. Although, if everyone works together the other countries can keep them in check.

I don't think that it's necessary for all countries to be completely united for one goal. I think it's important for a majority of the countries that have the most power to be united but smaller countries can have their own plan and do their own thing. We have lots of countries and if some of them aren't on board with the exact same plan its not gonna be the end of the world.

I would say that it is necessary for all countries to be unified in the common goal of environmental protection. Environmental protection is a global problem because environmental degradation is a global problem. If countries didn’t participate they would drag down the countries that are participating.

I think it is a unified goal, because if one country just doesnt follow its just counter-productive if most of the countries are trying to go clean but some just dont care. The earth will still be getting polluted if one still isnt going clean.

Personally I think that all countries should do it. If all your friends work together to make a cake, and the annoying lazy one who sat on the couch snoring like a dying cow comes in and says "Yay we did it!" Uh no no WE didn't do it Chief. I think other countries should be absolutely SHAMED to death, or even taxed for there pollution.

I think it needs to be a unified goal because it isn't a problem for just select countries, it is a world-wide problem and the best way to combat it is by working together.

All countries should unify and work together one climate change because one country not contributing ruins it for everyone else. It kind of has to be a collective effort because it is some that is affected and also affects everyone.

I think that it needs to be a unified goal, because we can accomplish so much more if we are all working towards the same thing. If individual countries choose not to help then it is very counterproductive. Worldwide problems need world wide solutions.

I think that it should be necessary to have everyone work together to get different view points. Not every country is the same and not just one country can make decisions for the other countries so it really just depends.

I think countries should all work together for World Wide issues, considering Global Warming and coral bleaching. But, for smaller issues like trash cleanup, we should work separately make more of a difference.

I feel as if progress can be made without complete participation. However, to truly accomplish goals all countries participating would be ideal. It makes a difference on which countries aren't working towards the goals. Its a big deal if large greenhouse gas contributors like the United States don't make efforts to address climate change and other environmental issues. Smaller countries like Monaco wouldn't be as big of a deal if they were to decline to participate.

I think for subjects like climate change and trash pollution, there should absolutely be a unified goal to overcome this. This type of environmental issue affects places all over the world and we need help and cooperation from everyone.

I think that unification as in being the part of the same organization isn't necessary, but unification as people of Earth and communicating and agreeing on doing their best to help mend the Earth and prevent more unsustainable ways of living from happening.

think it should be a worldwide goal for things like pollution and climate change because everyone is effected. While smaller things that are more country or state specific issues should be in charge of said places.

the best outcome for our environment is when all the countries work together to keep it healthy, but i also think that this is very far off because of political and personal agendas.

While I don't think there is any way all countries could be entirely united just because each country has its own environmental and economic needs. They could meet their own goals but the only issue is the country would need to have a need to meet the goal, such as if the country was heavily industrialized.

I think it'd be beneficial for us all to be on the same page but its not realistic. Without unification we can accomplish goals only for ourselves and only our countries and not accomplish things globally.
