Forum 3.1 - Work of the Biogeographer

11/19/2018

Central Question: How can biogeographers actually capture and study data?

Guiding Thought Question: Given what you know about biogeography what type of training and skills should they have in order to complete their work?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the ways in which biogeographers conduct their work by participating in a citizen science camera trap activity and learning about other methods such as mapping and photo recognition.

Biogeographers could have a lot of different skills and still be successful. Knowledge of general biology and ecology with geography would be very helpful.

They should have the ability to read charts and use technology like GPS and other systems that can help. It would probably help to be able to walk or move long distances with the gear you need. Reading maps and having background knowledge of the land or organism you are looking for would also probably help

Training they would need is map reading, and knowing the climate and geography, and lastly would need to know species of animals or plants.

They should be able to use mapping technology, understand climate/weather changes, they should go outside, and they should have knowledge about the migration patterns of species.

They would need training to know how to read the different types of maps, and the differences of the environment in different parts of the world. Knowing the different biomes and the changes of the earth would also be very important.

You really need to understand how the environment has changed over time
They also need to be really good at land nav.
