First Law of Geography (1.3)

8/27/2018

Central Question: How did the continents get their shape, and how does that impact the distribution of plants and animals?

Guiding Thought Question: Explain how Tobler's Law of geography will relate to the distribution of plants and animals around the planet's surface.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine the connections between the movement of the continents and the impact that has on the distribution of plants and animals. Students will be able to explain the mechanisms by which that happens, and the observations that led scientists to develop the theory.

he’s basically just saying that everything that didn’t spread too far is going to be more alike because they don’t have to adapt as much but everything that had spread further had to adapt more making them less alike

The continents formed their shape from the continental drift where the super continent split into different continents. Plants and animals were affected by this and were forced to evolve to survive in new locations under different conditions. Tobler's Law is relates to these distributions because species that live near and in similar environments will have similar characteristics in contrast to species that are across the world in opposite conditions.

By referring back to the idea of Pangaea, it could explain why the continents are shaped in such a way. How this helps the distribution of plants and animals is the sudden changes of the atmosphere, animals and plants had to develop in ways that they could adapt to their suddenly changed environment and evolve into a capable species/organism

The continental plates had drifted apart when Pangaea was still around, and these plates had drifted apart from one another and crashed into one another, creating what we see today. This impacts the distribution of animals because they are divided by the continents giving birth to new species and adaptations for animals because of the continental drift. Tobler's Law, is where Everything is related to everything else. But near things are more related than distant things. This relates to animal distribution because the animals that are close to one another have more similar habits and adaptations than that of an animal all the way across the world.
