Forum 3.4 - Elements of a Geographic Question

11/28/2018

Central Question: How can geography be used to address issues in the natural world?

Guiding Thought Question: What is the process to come up with a good research question that can be solved through a geographic field of inquiry? What elements does it have? How do you even come up with a solid research question?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will work through the geographic inquiry process by formulating a research question, collecting and organizing geographic information, analyzing that data to identify trends, and using that information to purpose a type of solution or means of addressing the topic.

Forum 3.3 - More of Biology or Geography

11/27/2018

Central Question: How can geographic analysis be used to discover spatial relationships between taxa?

Guiding Thought Question: Based on what you have seen from the study of Biogeography has it been more biology or geography? Or an equal combination of the two? Explain your reasoning.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the processes of Panbiogeography by covering methodology in notes and then putting that into practice by completing a Panbiogeographic analysis of the Rhinocerotidae genus.

Central Question: How can modern technology be used for biogeographic studies?

Guiding Thought Question: How can modern internet maps be more useful than paper maps when trying to collect, analyze, visualize, and share geographic information?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the applications and methods of internet mapping software by working through a mapping activity of behaviors of the greater bamboo lemur in Madagascar.

Forum 3.1 - Work of the Biogeographer

11/19/2018

Central Question: How can biogeographers actually capture and study data?

Guiding Thought Question: Given what you know about biogeography what type of training and skills should they have in order to complete their work?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the ways in which biogeographers conduct their work by participating in a citizen science camera trap activity and learning about other methods such as mapping and photo recognition.

Central Question: What is the relationship between biological species and their physical location?

Guiding Thought Question: What questions do you have regarding the content covered?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of concepts related to biogeography and how they are connected to the physical landscape..

Forum 2.17 - Where do Humans fit in?

11/9/2018

Central Question: What steps do you need to take to ensure you are successful on the coming test?

Guiding Thought Question: How do humans fit in as working within an ecosystem as a part of it, and as outsiders who are non-native to it?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will prepare for the upcoming end of unit test by playing a review game designed to engage their prior learning and review topics.

Forum 2.16 - Impacts of Changes to Landscapes

11/6/2018

Central Question: What does the world lose when a            species goes extinct?

Guiding Thought Question: First make a prediction at the connection between changes in physical geography and the extinction of species.  After making your prediction watch the youtube video on the sixth mass extinction and explain how changes in landscapes can trigger mass dies offs of species.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the importance of preserving species and making a case for the continued protection of all by designing informative

Forum 2.15 - Make a Case for Removal

11/4/2018

Case Study: Why is it so important to maintain populations of all types of species?

Guiding Thought Question: Choose an animal of some type (reptile, bird, insect, mammal, etc...) and make a case for removing it from the planet. (NO CHOOSING HUMANS)
Part 2 - Go on someone else's post and make a counter         argument on why that species should be protected and           kept.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine population dynamics by examining a case study of wolves and moose on Isle Royale and how one species can impact another, and how the removal of one can have a drastic effect on the landscape and potential ecosystem collapse.
