Central Question: Why are islands such important fields of study in biogeography? Guiding Thought Question: Apply the ideas from the article "Effects of Climate Changer on Biodiversity" to explain why island species especially are so critically endangered due to climate change. Today's Learning Objective: Students will gain a basic understanding of the importance of islands in their study of biogeography, and the type of work that is being done to understand them better by focusing specifically on the Galapagos and Madagascar. |

Island species especially are so critically endangered because of climate change because they have become so specialized and used to their environment that they haven't needed to change much. Climate change is becoming more and more of an issue for these animals because of rising sea levels, etc.

They don't have anywhere else to go so they're trapped to a certain area and if they lose their food source because it dies or moves then they could starve

The reason that climate change effects island species and similar groups is because an island species is locked to specific niches or a singular niche and each animal requires special care. Climate change can cause landscapes, temperature, and climate to change which in return damages the population of the species which is why things such as pollution have caused many extinctions of aquatic wildlife (like coral and exotic fish for example)

island species are especially vulnerable to climate change because they are endemic to their islands. they are very specialized to their area and any major changes, such as climate change, will be very harmful to their populations.

Islands are restricted land masses that prevent species shifting to avoid stressors or environmental push factors.

Island species are extremely isolated and have become very specialized to their specific environment. Because of this island species are critically endangered due to climate change as they are especially vulnerable to changes in the environment/climate. Since they have been so isolated they are unable to adapt to changes as quickly as species who are not isolated.

Island species cannot shift their ranges like species on continents. Thus, they are forced to adapt to the environment they're stuck on, rather than being able to migrate to somewhere that has their preferred climate.

Islands are much less diverse in climate composition, making it harder to shift range to a more suitable climate if the current one becomes unsustainable for the species.

Since they are islands they are separated by large amounts of water. This makes it so animals have no where to go when something changes in their environment. so things like rising sea level have huge effects on islands.

island species are particular endangered by climate change because they’re made to suit their specific environment. if the climate changes significantly in a small amount of time, these species that have been exclusively used to the same conditions for years don’t have the time to adapt

Islands are separated by a lot of water so many times there evolutions are purely showing how they needed to evolve for that area specifically because they have no access to any other environments.

Island species are very endangered because they are so specialized to their certain island. Island species are also usually smaller in numbers so they can go extinct faster.

Island species have had a past in which they experience the same location and range for years, not having to expand or adapt to new locations. They are, for the most part, forced to stay on the island, limiting their range expansion. This becomes a problem when climate change is altering their only habitat because they cannot move or adapt to new climate as easily, thus endangering the entire species population.

Islands animals are so heavily affected by climate change because they are extremely specialized to living on the island that they live on, and with nowhere to go in order to be able to continue living how they learned to, and no way to adapt fast enough to survive such a drastic sudden change, they are being choked out of being able to live how they have adapted to live.

Island species do not have the ability to go anywhere else because they do not know if there is another area that has the conditions for them to live in and are forced to adapt to the climate that they are on instead of migrating to a place with the right conditions.

Islands have a limited space where animals cannot move around freely (obviously) but also in islands animals fill very specific niches in these spaces and a changes could effect them greatly

Islands become critically endangered due to climate change because of their specialized biomes, precipitation levels and species. Any drastic form of change (like climate change) will most likely throw the island out of order. Islands are also completely surrounded by water, making rising sea levels much more dangerous to the island.

in the ocean from development tourism, increases in ocean unsustainable fishing, and pollution. and other island species cant move there ranges like most other animals can they have adapted to there range only and i don´t think if they ended up in another area they wouldn´t last long
