Central Question: What factors impact biodiversity on islands?

Guiding Thought Question: What factor do you think is going to have biggest effect on the biodiversity of an island? Why will that factor have such a large effect?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about isolation, area, and equilibrium theories as they relate to island biogeography by examining case-studies in a map activity and the biodiversity of Iceland.

humans will have the largest effect on the biodiversity of an island because we are infamous for killing off species, deforestation, etc.

I believe that isolated forests will have the largest impact on biodiversity because it removes pest predators such as birds and forces animals to relocate to a different location (except they can't due to already being limited and surrounded by ocean which then cause that species to become extinct or decline in population and thus less biodiversity)

Weather because if a big hurricane comes through everything would die or have no food

The size of an island and its distance from other landmasses will have the greatest effect on its biodiversity because those factors limit how many species can survive on the island and how many species can get to the island.

I think the factors that will have the biggest effect of biodiversity of an island will be forest fires, rising sea levels, and warming climate. I think that these three will be the biggest because if there is a forest fire animals could get stuck and be caught in the fire, if the sea levels rise any more animals and plants will drown, and warming climate will make ranges become smaller and smaller.

The amount of resources because more resources decreases competition which allows for more species of plants and animals which results in more biodiversity

When the island was formed (age), historic and current climate

Weather would play a huge roll in biodiversity of an island because if a tropical storm came through then it would cause damage. This means that there would be less resources and food.

Weather would have a massive effect on biodiversity on an island because just one storm can destroy plant life and resources for animals to use for survival and would then have to adapt to the destruction and find new ways to survive.

I think weather because just one bad storm can destroy a lot of plant life and a lot of animal resources and food

Humans because they cause issues that aren't naturally occurring and we suck :( most other things can cause damage but they would naturally occur in nature so its not that bad.

i think we honestly have the biggest impact because we kill lots of animals and deforestation, but weather can be another large impact as well because storms cause lots of damage to plants and sometimes even our houses.

probably climate change? island climates seem pretty consistent, so if climate change alters something by a small amount, it can have really lasting effects

Human impact probably affects island biodiversity the most because it causes climate change and habitat loss. Because islands hold such large amounts of endemic species and species that could not expand their range to other areas, human can easily and quickly harm many species.

What organisms got there before the separation or could get there. How large the island is and how many resources.

there isn't a lot of area/room in general, so that effect how much animals can move around/ migrate.

Temperature change. Temperature change will have a huge affect on islands because if the temperature goes outside of the tolerance range then anything that isn't in it's tolerance range anymore then it will most likely die due to the fact that it can't move anywhere to get back into it's tolerance range.
