Forum 2.15 - Make a Case for Removal

11/4/2018

Case Study: Why is it so important to maintain populations of all types of species?

Guiding Thought Question: Choose an animal of some type (reptile, bird, insect, mammal, etc...) and make a case for removing it from the planet. (NO CHOOSING HUMANS)
Part 2 - Go on someone else's post and make a counter         argument on why that species should be protected and           kept.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine population dynamics by examining a case study of wolves and moose on Isle Royale and how one species can impact another, and how the removal of one can have a drastic effect on the landscape and potential ecosystem collapse.

I'm not really sure that there even should be an animal removed, but if I picked it would probs be monkeys because they seem kinda pointless.

Monkeys, while quite general, were an important step in humans evolution and have shown us a lot about where humanity has come from. They also act as ambassador species for ecosystems across the globe.

Sardines should be removed because they are a tiny and insignificant fish that people generally don’t like to eat because of the taste.

Sardines are low in mercury, meaning they are a good, as well as cheap, food source

Anopheles mosquitos are stupid awful creatures that spread malaria. They cause millions of deaths worldwide as disease vectors and their niche could be filled by other types of mosquitoes that don't spread malaria. Thanos snap these guys.

as much as they suck they still feed the lower part of the food chain. but yea agreed

Stink bugs because they seem pretty pointless

Stink bugs actually help maintain the food web by controlling the moth and beetle populations

stink bugs pick up and move around waste which fertilizes the soil and cleans up an area.

Even though I love them a lot I guess I would say jellyfish since they don't really keep any other species populations in check and they give no nutritional value to other animals.

Jellyfish are an important food source for lots of sea creatures such as salmon, sea turtles, and even sharks. They don't have calories, but they do have fatty acids important for the construction of cell membranes.

I think that Zebra Muscles should be eliminated because they're a pest species

They are filter feeders

They're a pest species in America, but they have a native ecosystem where they fill a niche.

Wasps should be removed because they seem to serve only one purpose and that is to constantly attack animals, people, and plants alike.

Wasps are great pollinators and play a key role in keeping the ecosystem balanced and regulate the populations of many crop pests.

Flies because they have no purpose other than being annoying freeloaders. There are much better pollinators and do they even do that much cleaning?

St. Francis Satyrs, a nickel sized butterfly that is only found on Fort. Bragg. There’s only a few hundred of them left. Conserving the population consists of destroying the butterfly’s habitat (similar to pyric herbivory), and in turn destroys the habitat of many animals who will not benefit.

i think that sea walnuts should be removed because they are killing commercial fish by eating zooplankton and thats what the commercial fish eat causing them to die and commercial fish numbers to drop rapidly as well as killing dolphins and other fish that eat zooplankton so obvously they are a big problem and they were brought by boat into lots of diffrent seas and it will just be a massive impact on the sea life

even though it is invasive, it is still important to its native ecosystem, and if removed will leave big impacts on said ecosystem.

Ticks, because they kill a bunch of other things with Lyme disease. I understand that they’re food for a bunch of other animals, but they’re gross and I hate them.

While ticks are extremely annoying, and they do cause problems in many aspects of animals and human's lives, they are an extremely good food source for many species of bird and would most likely harm at least some species (though I'm not sure which).

Ticks may seem unnecessarily hurtful to many species, but it is a vital link of energy and nutrition in the food chain for species, especially ground birds such as chickens and turkeys. The ticks sucks nutrients out of species of many trophic levels but allowing lower trophic level animals to consume them and gain some of that nutrients.

Killer algae should be removed because there are many other types of algae that can take its place, and killer algae strangle other types of plants, making them an invasive species.

Humans should be removed because let's be honest, they literally kill everything and are only really beneficial to themselves. However, if T refuses to accept that answer, then probably mosquitoes because they don't actually keep anything alive, and the things that do feed on it (like dragonflies) have other food sources they could use to sustain their numbers.

very edgy with the human thing, but an argument for mosquitos! they’re awful, obviously. no one enjoys them. but they’re like, a MAJOR food source. as in, nonreplaceable since there’s so many things that eat SO many of them.

Spiders are cool and cute too and they eat a lot of mosquitoes also froggies and toads they hoppin and eating them dudes so while the number of mosquitoes is a lot some are needed

I agree mosquitoes are gross but they provide food and pollination. They pollinate when they consume nectar.

Mosquitoes seem like they serve no purpose. They are just simply annoying to human life and other animals. Their bites are painful, irritating, and can carry disease. All they ever want to do is annoy us.

If mosquitoes were eradicated from the planet, hundreds of species of fish would have to change their diet. ... Without these fish, the food chain would be disrupted in both directions. Some species of bird, bat, spider, insect, salamander, lizard, and frog also eat mosquitoes, and may struggle without them.

Black rats because they are extremely invasive and have caused or contributed to many species numbers declining or completely disappearing. One example is they eat bird eggs.

Although they caused or contributed to many species numbers declining or completely disappearing, they proved food for lots of different animals such as, Birds of Prey, Felines, Snakes, Dogs and weasels.
And if they are gone then those animals that feed off of them, they would be harmed and there would be a lot more competion. also they have a funny name Rattus rattus.

Panda, they don’t contribute much to the environment and to be honest if it wasn’t for us they would’ve been gone they serve as a logo and a cute animal now. And if they died we’d probably use that as a way to protect other animals

Zebra muscles -- they coat surfaces with razor-sharp shells; foul anchor chains; block water intake pipes; steal plankton and other food from native fish, & filter out algae that native species attach to--& incapacitate--native mussels.
