Forum 2.16 - Impacts of Changes to Landscapes

11/6/2018

Central Question: What does the world lose when a            species goes extinct?

Guiding Thought Question: First make a prediction at the connection between changes in physical geography and the extinction of species.  After making your prediction watch the youtube video on the sixth mass extinction and explain how changes in landscapes can trigger mass dies offs of species.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the importance of preserving species and making a case for the continued protection of all by designing informative

because a species has adapted to be able to live in a certain area, any quick and massive change can cause the species to die off.

Species are usually perfectly adapted to their specific environment so changing that environment could hugely impact that species which could lead to their potential extinction.

In the video she talks about how over consumption of resources by one species can have a damaging impact on all species. Human action has also led to habitat loss which can lead to extinction.

Prediction: The change of climate and the surroundings/change of the landscape can cause a species to go extinct due to not being able to adapt to the new environment and failing to migrate. Competition can also be a factor

Video:
-Human cause: Habitat destruction, overfishing, harvesting, poaching.
-Animals meeting each other that can cause issues
-Mass consumption from a species (typically people)

When humans physically change the geography of a place it can directly effects animals and lead to their extinction.

In the video she talks about how global trade moves species around and introduces species to others and that creates invasive species. Deforestation can lead to extinction by taking away animals homes.

Physical Geography alters terrain in such a way that water may prevent or increase transportation as will land changes from a variety of causes like volcanoes or habitat destruction. Too rapid of change makes it hard for adaptations to in populations to catch up.

When geography changes and species can't adapt then they die

When animals are used to a certain environment and it changes it can lead to conflicts.

Human causes harvesting and habitat destruction

Animals rely on physical geography to survive, including climate, soil conditions, ph, etc.
If these conditions change, then species will go extinct as environments are no longer able to support them. Additionally, physical geography allows animals to move locations. So like when the isthmus of panama connected North and South America, species from those two continents competed with each other for the niches available in both places, leading to extinction of some species like the Terror Bird.

I predicted that geographic changes result in extinction because animals are adapted to suit there specific environment (including climate, landforms, etc.). If these animals aren’t suited for their environment anymore, they will die. The video focused more on how humans have been effecting land geography through our actions (in turn effecting plants and animals). This matters to humans because everything is connected in a food web, so eventually these negative effects will make their way to humans.

most species are adapted to a certain enviorment so changing there enviorment can be very bad it could lead to extinction if it goes to far

if the species cant adapt fast enough they wont make it and will die off

I think that if there are significant, or even gradual geographic changes, it will result in the extinction of animals. The animals are adapted to their geographic environment, so if that environment changes the animal cant survive anymore. Like with sea levels rising on coasts, animals that lived on those coasts wont survive because they’ll be under water! and die

Things are adapted to their environments so when their environments geographically change things go extinct.

the video confirms. Basically humans suck and we are the reason so many things are going extinct right now. We are doing things such as moving physical things, overfishing, poaching etc. that actively change the environment.

While it depends on the organism but many of them are filling a specific niche in their environment and if the environment changes it can take away shelter, food, resources essentially forcing the organism to die out.

I predict the connection is that when geography changes animals can't adapt quick enough causing them to die. The video talked about habitat destruction caused by humans that will cause the 6th extinction.

I think that the connection between physical geography and species extinction is that humans are changing and killing the physical geography which in turn can make species go extinct.

The changing of the environments at the rate that the humans are doing it is making it so that the animals cannot adapt fast enough to survive the changes the humans are making, and that ends up with species going extinct.

Change in physical geography pushes species to extinction because they are often unable to survive and live efficiently on other land than what they are specialized and adapted to

If the changes are too fast, if the changes are huge, and food will dissipate, or invasive.

Animals will lose their habitat, invasive species will cause disease and destruction, humans also aid in some of these processes.

Prediction: Physical geography can lead to some extinction due to the inability of the species to evolve quickly enough to catch up to the change of physical geography.

The video talked about the affect of humans on species and how we’re speeding up their extinction.
