Guiding Thought Question: What is the most effective way for citizens to have their opinions heard by the government? Explain your thinking.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the different methods through which citizens can participate in the American political process, and then practice by contacting a representative regarding an issue the feel is important.

Central Question: How can American citizens more directly get involved in the process of American Government and protecting the environment? (1.1.b, 1.2.a)

The most definitive way for a citizen to get their voice heard is to vote in all elections. The most true to your own voice is the primaries and the original races with all of the candidates.

The most effective way for people to voice their opinions in the government is by voting. Voting allows people to simply vote on the choices presented, which helps them express their opinions to the government.

I think the most effective way of citizens voicing their opinions is voting. Voting has a huge impact on many different things. For example, this past election had one of the most impactful outcomes due to large amount of voters who voiced their opinions.

I agree, because that just simply voting was able to making a huge change on the government during the election.

I think the most effective way for people to be heard by the government is potentially through social media, although not the way they’re set up now. I feel like if it were less available for comment from others it’d go better and people could be more honest about it. It’s easily accessible, can be seen from anywhere, and effectively demonstrates what people want.

I think this is a logical idea because social media is so accessible and widely used by people. The difficulty would be assuring false information does not spread through the platform while not withholding people’s right to free speech.

I agree, social media has a huge impact today and is a good way to get your opinions and concerns heard, and to talk with other people who share your views.

Citizens have a number of forums to have their opinions heard, from voting, to calling representatives, to protesting, to referendums on ballots, to running for office. The most effective way for citizens to have their voices heard (in my opinion) is by running for office. Representatives are meant to enact the will of their constituents, however they often act selfishly or are able to shape the will of their constituents. If somebody runs for office, they can shape the politics of their local area, even if they don't win (Sanders was able to push the democratic party to the left without winning). This ability to run for office is a powerful tool, that anyone has a chance to lead their community.

In order to be taken seriously and have their opinion heard, citizens should use public forums like town halls. Congressional representatives for a given district, as well as other mayoral and political figures can attend and listen to what an individual has to say. Discourse is also possible, and ideas can be fully flushed out in a civil manner.

I like the town hall thing because it will get directly noticed by people who have the power to make change

For general opinions representatives the best way to be heard because they will directly be involved in national politics. For smaller things protesting will get ideas seen

The best way for people to get involved in government is to vote whenever possible and make and sign petitions. They can also write to their representatives if needed to express their opinions and concerns.

The best way to have your opinion heard is by voting, by voting for who you think will best represent your ideas in the government. They have the most power and will be able to best represent your opinions.

Voting and voicing your opinion to your representatives are the best way to have your opinions heard. Voting allows you to choose who you want to represent your community but to insure they actually vote for change you want, you must let them know.

I think the best way to be heard is through voting, as individuals do not hold as much power as the officials they can elect. These officials, in theory, represent the opinions the citizens who voted for them hold, & usually act in accordance to them.

To start off with if they want a more direct affect, they should contact their representatives to advocate for them. Also if they don’t want to have you as an individual, you could start a petition and get signatures. In addition, depending on the topic or opinion you want to get through, you could do a peaceful protest or contact your city office.
