Guiding Thought Question: Why is it a disservice to only talk about the native peoples of the Americas in a historical context? Why is it important to incorporate the current perspectives of American Indians? Why is the input of Native Americans important in making decisions that impact the environment? Central Question: How does the role of Tribal Governance differ and how do their views on Environmental conservation compare to those of the State and Federal governments?(HS.1.1.d, HS.1.2.a, HS.1.2.d) |

It is important to incorporate the current perspectives of Native Americans because, if we look at them only in a historical context, we will forget the very real problems that they face today and the role that they play in our modern society. Native American's should have input in making decisions that impact the environment because they are one of the groups most effected by the environment, with many practicing local agriculture, as well as being experts in local ecosystems due to their long tradition and time living here in a sustainable way.

Native people are not gone so we do not need to talk about them in the past tense. Native cultures are still thriving and are an active part of life in America. Their perspectives on land and natural resources is different than the US governments perspective and we need to listen to the native people.

It is a disservice to only talk about the native people of America in a historical context because they still exist today. To only talk about them in historical context, is to deny that they still exist today. It is also important to include their perspectives because they also have a right to be included on things, such as environmental protection. By having this input, it can help get support for decisions that impact the environment.

Native Americans have largely retained their cultural attitudes towards the environment. With developments in technology and new methods of polluting and other risks to conserved land, natives perspectives are even more valuable on how the general public and federal government can best go about preserving the environment.

It’s not good to talk about them only in a historic way because it makes them sound like something of the past and doesn’t explain what they are doing today. They are part of America and should have a say in government just like anyone else

It isn’t right to talk about native Americans only in a historical context, as they’re still here today and still live in the U.S. and therefore need to have their voices and opinions heard in our government. To talk only about their history is to ignore their voices today.

Native Americans are still facing many problems today. We can't just talk about the past because they're still facing problems today. The past is still effecting the Native Americans in the present.

I think Native Americans shouldn’t just be mentioned historical but also as US citizens that have their own struggles that need to be brought up. Native Americans are known for their cultural values and beliefs and how they strive to protect and preserve all natural lands, they also have a deep connection with their lands, making their opinions on environmental issues just as important. Let’s also not forget they were the first true founders of America, and have stayed through all injustices.

It is very important for Americans to not only talk about indigenous peoples as history in order to preserve the culture and not take away the identity of an entire community of people. Only addressing historical aspects of the indigenous people imply that all indigenous people have assimilated or become American, that their cultural ideas and actions do not exist anymore. The environment is a large aspect in their lives, and often, regulations and actions most evidently impact their lives. Their communities are facing these problems now, but are found unheard.
