Forum 3.6 - Who Should You Trust Online?

11/29/2020

Guiding Thought Question: What are ways to pick out fake news while reading online or on social media? What are some good general rules to follow to find credible information?

Today's Learning Objectives: Students will examine the role that the Media has as a linkage institution and as a means for the government to promote their agenda by taking notes. Students will then look at how organizations can use Mass Media to get information out to voters regarding their representatives.

Central Question: What role does the Media have in linking the actions of the United States Government and the People? Why is a "Free Media" so important in a Democracy? (1.2.a, 1.2.e, 1.2.f)

- When was it published
- If you can contact them
- The publisher/author of the info
- If you've heard about the website if it's credible or not

Look for misspellings or typos, cross check information against other credible sources, look for dates and authors/ contributors.

On social media it's easy to tell if you look at the amount of likes and comments are under a post and how many followers or followings the person posting has. Online it's easy to tell if you have or haven't heard of the publisher or if they target very heavily on a specific topic that goes against others. Some good rules would be to check spelling, plug the URL into the bias website and compare with other articles relating to the topic.

Exacerbated headlines with lots of trigger words, outlandish claims that either seem to good to be true, or too bad to have possibly happened. Checking the sources that the article gets its information from, checking when the article was published, looking into other work that the article/writer has published, and making sure the person writing them can actually be reached.
