Task: Skim over the reading "How Streamflow is Measured" by the USGS. And be ready to discuss the following questions 
  1. What is streamflow and how is it measured?
  2. Why is streamflow a helpful predictor of stream health?
  3. How is streamflow potentially going to affect the quality of water?
  4. What sorts of factors are going to change streamflow?


Objectives:

  • Study will be able to identify the issues affecting water systems and drinking water in their community and be able to explain what causes those issues.
  • Students will be able to Explain the effectiveness and determine the credibility  of available geospatial resources to understand water quality issues in their community. 
  • Students can use available data sources to collect data and form an argument using the data as supportive evidence.

Streamflow is the measurement of how much water is flowing through a stream. Streamflow is a helpful predictor of stream health because it informs engineering design, flood predictions and water management and research. Streamflow will potentially effect the quality of water because low stream flow can cause high water temperatures and low levels of dissolved oxygen. The factors that will change streamflow are discharge and height of the water,

1. Stream flow is how much water is flowing through a river. The process of measuring it is called streamgaging and it has three steps. First, one must measure the stream stage, then measure the discharge, and finally define the relationship between the stream stage and the discharge.
2. The amount of water flowing through a stream is a direct effect of how much water is coming from the source (typically mountains), as well as how much water is being redirected for other uses.
3. If there is a lot of water in the stream, then the potentially harmful stuff in the river is diluted.

1. You can get an idea of what stream stage is by looking at a picture of a common staff gage, which is used to make a visual reading of stream stage. The gage is marked in 1/100th and 1/10th foot intervals.
2. It helps us to know if water is good or not because it might have been sitting for a while and not had much streamflow
3. Becuase if it's sitting and there's no streamflow then the water is gross and stalleable

Streamflow is the measure of how much water is flowing through a river.it is measured via a stage discharge relation. In terms of stream health, measuring flow can detect blockages and evaporation issues along the stream. A faster stream flow means the water is less standing, meaning that it could be significantly safer to drink than standing water. Factors influencing streamflow could be evaporation, blockages, and buildup of substrate.

1, the stream height and how much water flows through the stream, can be measured by using a stilling well in the river bank or measuring the pressure
2. It’s collecting useful information right from the stream
3. Lots of water in the stream, and if there are toxins in it or not
4. Runoff, ground-water discharge, evaporation, sedimentation

- Stream flow is a helpful predictor of stream health because a weaker flow means that something is wrong.
- stream flow is potentially going to affect the water quality of water because depending if the steam is faster then the more things are getting into the water
-The amount of rain water that gets to the rivers/steams

1. how much water is flowing down a river; measuring stream stage discharge relation
2.it helps us know wether or not the stream is healthy or not- strong and fast or weak and puny
3. it can determine how much debris is staying in the water and how much is sinking to the bottom
4.factors are: runoff, ground-water discharge, evaporation, sedimentation

1. Stream flow, is the volume of water that moves over a designated point over a fixed period of time. it is measured by measuring the stream stage, then measure the discharge, and finally define the relationship between the stream stage and the discharge.
2. It’s collecting useful information right from the stream and all other water sources it is connected to up to the point it is collected.
3. High water temperature, low levels of dissolved oxygen, and deleterious levels of toxins can all be caused by low stream flow.
4.Runoff from rainfall and snowmelt., Evaporation, Transpiration by vegetation, Ground-water discharge from aquifers, Ground-water recharge from surface-water bodies

1. Streamflow can be used for indicating floods, water management and allocation, engineering design, research, operation of locks and dams, and recreational safety and enjoyment. It is measured by using a stream stage and computers streamflow and shows height of water surface.
2. Streamflow is a good predictor because it can show how high the water surface is, the periodic measurements of discharge, and how stage and discharge relates to each other to estimate streamflow or discharge.
3. It can affect the water temperature, low levels of oxygen, and toxins by lower amounts of stream flow.
4. Erosion or deposition of steambed materials, seasonal vegetation growth, debris, or ice.

the streamflow is the flow in which the river runs in. it is measured by the height of the water surface at a location along a stream or river.
2. Why is streamflow a helpful predictor of stream health?
it helps us identify f the water is good or not. If it had just been sitting there still or if it had been flowly fast.
3. How is streamflow potentially going to affect the quality of water?
streamflow would potentially affect the water quality because if it is just sitting soaking up the heat then it could start causing different bacteria's to grow.
What sorts of factors are going to change streamflow?
factors that are going to change the streamflow is rain, snow, or a hurricane. more rain means more water means faster streamflow.

1. A stream flow is how much water is in//flowing in a river, it can be used to detect floods, you measure it by using a stream gage it has 3 steps to the prosses.
2. you usually can see the water's health by detecting the velocity of water.
3.stream flow can affect//because low levels of dissolved oxygen, High water temperature, and deleterious levels of toxins can all be caused by low stream flow. the water source usually comes from, usually it comes from snow melt from mountains. so it should be healthy.

1. Streamflow is how much water is flowing through a river.
2. If the streamflow is off it could mean there's a block in the river, too little rainfall, or too much water is getting taken from the river.
3. If the water is more still, it gives germs and other harmful stuff more time to fester in the water, so a robust streamflow keeps the water safer.
4. Drought, upstream obstacles, changes in the environment, etc.

Streamflow is measured with streamgages that measure stage and consist of a structure in which instruments used to measure, store, and transmit the stream-stage information are housed.

Streamflow can help identify how health and clean the water is and how it will affect the water down the line.

How is streamflow potentially going to affect the quality of water?

Factors that change streamflow are by erosion or deposition of streambed materials, seasonal vegetation growth, debris, or ice
