Guiding Inquiry: What is the United Nations and how can it help guide global environmentalism? (1.1.f, 1.2.d, 3.4.c)

Guiding Thought Question: Why would having a world-wide government organization be beneficial to address environmental issues? Why might smaller, more localized forms of governments be better?

Today's Learning Objectives: Students will examine the ways in which the United Nations can affect the global political environment and how their initiatives can encourage a unified approach to environmentalism by reviewing and critiquing the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Similar to the World health organization that sets standards and expectations for health, it could be beneficial for the environment. An international organization can provide resources and consulting for individual governments. Localized governments know exactly what is needed in their community.

A world-wide government organization would be beneficial to address environmental issues because they can work together with other countries to address issues that they're facing. In addition to this, they can also enforce better rules and regulations due to having the funds to enforce them.
Smaller, more localized forms of government can also be better because they can address the problems specifically in that area. Plus, they can come up with better plans that help the people specifically there.

A world wide organization might be beneficial to address environmental issues because environmental issues affect the world on a global scale, so holding nations accountable is important. The actions of a nation affect all other nations, so it's important for every nation to do their part to protect the environment.
The problem with universal organizations, is that they often fail to be effective, because not everyone will have the same goals. A more local group can bring together people with more shared values, allowing regulations that protect the environment to be more strict.

A worldwide government organization would be good because they can make sure that all countries have environmental regulations and protection. Smaller governments might be better for environmental protection because the countries themselves can decide how much they need to focus on environmental protection based on their individual situation.

A world wide government would be beneficial because it could quickly take care of issues including greenhouse gasses and ocean pollution. Local government are better for handling smaller issues that most only impact them.

Worldwide attention to issues can help set standards and regulations through data that was collected internationally. This would be beneficial to all types of individuals and can help keep peace between countries or create new relationships/ connections. Local sized attention is better because it is more area focused and the affect is more directed.

A worldwide government organization would be beneficial to environmental issues because it would be a way to address issues immediately having a consistent control over what efforts are put in and regulate the impact. Smaller more localized would be helpful in more focused efforts for particular regions and the people in them and would not have to reach as wide of an appeal for get people on board with efforts
