Forum 2.2 - When is enough, enough?

1/31/2021

Guiding Inquiry: What responsibility do we have to maintain natural resources? Or are they simply here for our use? (3.3.a, 3.4.a)

Guiding thought Question: What do you think it would take to take to convince climate and environmental skeptics that humans are having a marked effect on the environment?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will review theories of population and how they reflect human's relationship with the environment and debate the ideas of environmental determinism and possibilism.

I think it would take a time machine to convince all of them. You'd need to go to the future to show them the severe effects that it has.

It would take a lot of time and resources in order to convince climate/environmental skeptics to accept that humans are having a marked effect on the environment. Plus, it would also possibly take a whole rewrite of our education system in order to convince others based on facts.

I think that bringing a climate skeptic in a climate caused disaster like a hurricane, snowstorm in Texas, or a fragmented forest.

For many, nothing can convince them of something they don't want to believe in as long as there are sources they find trustworthy that validate their incorrect world-view. So... maybe convince FOX to stop peddling lies about climate and the environment?

I think it would take a lot of evidence and studies to show people how much impact humans have on the environment, as well as examples, like comparison pictures of ice caps melting due to the burning of fossil fuels.

I like to think that once the change is so noticeable that it affects their daily life so negatively they'll start believing

I think to get a majority of the people to believe and understand the human impact on climate, proper education among the youth generation will be very beneficial. On the other hand, there will be a great number of people who still don’t believe, and probably won’t until they themselves experience negative impacts backed with science, they probably currently have the privilege of not dealing with the imapcts
