Forum 2.5 - Limits to Ownership?

2/21/2021

Guiding Inquiry: How do human's economic habits affect the planet's species? (3.2.a, 3.3.b)

Guiding Thought Question: What restrictions, if any, should there be on our abilities to buy, sell, and own different species? Why should those restrictions be there? Or, if you said there should not be any restrictions explain your reasoning.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine how economic demands, including those of the black market, affect global species and the economic, social, political, and environmental impacts of these forces.

If possible animals should not be bought and sold. It is best to adopt pets like dogs, cats, hamsters, and other common household pets. Exotic animals should only be traded among AZA accredited zoos.

If someone is buying or selling a different species, there should be many restrictions for it. One example of this could be the purpose of the buying and where the seller got the species. This is because if the species is being used to control another species, they could potentially turn into an invasive species that could do more harm than good. In addition to this, if the seller gets the species illegally, they should be prosecuted as they most likely harmed the species while trying to capture it.
In short, the restrictions keep others safe and also keeps people from doing illegal things.

I think it should be illegal for individuals to buy, sell, and own endangered species, and that organizations that wish to buy, sell, and own endangered species should have tight regulations. There should also be regulation on the ownership and sale of all exotic (non-domestic) species to protect them from neglect, to protect humans from potential harm, and to protect the environment from endangered species.

I feel like there definitely needs to be restrictions on any species that is endangered, (significantly) difficult to care for, or is a dangerous animal. The trafficking/purchasing of these animals needs to be prevented, and a good way to do this is with things like background checks, or a complete ban on the spread of said animals.

I don't like how I said this so I'm changing it, exotic and endangered animals should not be under the care of anyone except accredited organizations, and domesticated animals should be obtained through adoption and not purchasing.

I think that there should be restrictions and regulations for owning and selling any animal and even more for exotic animals. They need to be in place so people don’t own animals they can’t properly care for or train and so they don’t have dangerous ones

I think it should be restricted by needing to pass a wellness check before being able to buying an animal, just to make sure they have all the means and capability of taking care of the animal

I think there needs to be restrictions on owning and selling animals that are endangered or exotic in order to protect them. Exotic animals need proper care, and endangered animals need to be protected therefore there should be strict rules on who can own them.
