Guiding Inquiry: How does the involvement of an organization like the UN add credibility to conservation efforts? (1.1.c, 1.1.f, 3.2.b, 3.2.c, 3.5.c)

Guiding Thought Question: What risks do countries potentially face by promoting their protected areas to international tourists? What can they potentially gain? Why might countries not want their sites under international protected status?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the creation of UNESCO and the World Heritage Site by recording notes about the program and then doing a virtual investigation of World Heritage Sites Using Google Earth.

One of the biggest threats to national parks is visitors. The visitors a park has, the more worn the trails and the more trash in the parks. While visitors bring revenue they can also endanger the wild spaces.

Promoting protected areas to international tourists can bring in tourist money to a country, helping its economy. However, foreign tourists have little incentives to treat destinations well, as they are unlikely to visit many times. This can lead to the degradation of important sites.
Having their sites under international protections can limit how a country can use their important tourist sites. These international protections can prevent them from altering these sites in ways that would improve tourist income or the number of tourists that can come to a place.

Some potential cons that countries risk are that the areas could be blocked off for tourists, meaning that common people wouldn't be able to go to areas that they used to go to. In addition to this, the area could be overrun with tourists, which could mean that the area would possibly suffer with more pollution due to them. Some potential pros that countries have are that it gives more economic prosperity due to the money coming in. Another thing is that they could teach others about their culture, which could help them with potential issues.
Of course, some places may not want their places under international status because they may not have the funds available or they just don't want to.

One of the threats is the public not respecting the protected areas. For example, some tourists might not know how to correctly treat a protected place.

I feel like pollution is a pretty big issue that comes with tourism. The more people you have in the area, the more trash there is to be spread. However, it can bring in more income to the communities. Countries may not want international protection because of things they intend to do as a community with the land that they won't be able to do if it's protected.

cons of advertising protected areas to tourist are the tourists could possibly harm the area, in turn causing the area diminish and the country would lose money. They could potentially gain money from tourism to take care of and protect said area. Some countries may not want to establish protected area because they'd have less freedom to do what they want with it and market it to tourists.

Tourists are destructive and without a good system to protect land marks from being damages. A lot of money comes from people visiting. In some cases if a country wants to do a unique experience they may not want an area protected so they can offer things a protected area can’t

One of the biggest risks of having tourist in natural areas is the pollution they can cause a lot of waste and if you don't have the need resources to clean it up it can pile up.
