HOMEWORK QUIZ - SOLAR INSOLATION CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING
Guiding Inquiry: How can the geographic theme of "regions" be used to better understand the categorization of ecological areas? (3.2.a)

Guiding Thought Question: Is Nebraska more part of the Midwest or the Great Plains region of the United States? Defend your answer with evidence that supports your assertion (it can be a link to a website). Is the idea of The Great Plains more of a perceptual region or a formal region (definitions below)

Formal Region: Area with measurable characteristics        (physical or human)

Perceptual Region: Area's definition depends upon           a places' perceived characteristics.

Today's Learning Objection: Students will learn about the different classifications of regions as they apply to biomes and ecoregions by examining the importance of temperature and precipitation

Midwest because it's mid and in the middle of the country

It's a perceptual region because people only know it for farming and chimney rock basically

I think that Nebraska can be put into both. This website I found showed that the Great Plains is considered a formal region (https://michaelminn.net/tutorials/regions-usa/index.html).
However I think that Nebraska is toeing the line of being in the Midwest and not being in it.

east nebraska=midwest, west nebraska=great plains; great plains are a perceptual region because when people think of the great plains they think of wide open fields of grass and tumble weeds and stuff. That's nor really how eastern nebraska is and that's why it's more part of the midwest

Great Plains because we have a lot of prairie and flatlands

Nebraska is more a part of the Great Plains because Nebraska originally was made up of many grassland areas before human civilization and agriculture (i.e the trees we have here in Nebraska now weren't here before and were instead major open grasslands). Nebraska is more formal because human civilization has caused a major evolution of Nebraska from something as simple as the trees being planted to houses being built.

Nebraska is part of the Great Plains region. It’s characteristics are much different than other areas in the Midwest, like Wisconsin and Michigan, we’re there is much more snow.

Nebraska is midwest because it is the most central a state can be. It is in the middle of the US and is much more midwest than Ohio. I think the great plains is more of a perceptional region. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4f/Map_of_USA_Midwest.svg/1200px-Map_of_USA_Midwest.svg.png

It really doesn't matter... words are all made up anyway so it's a more great plains region but the normal term is Midwest but Nebraska is still just Nebraska. What matters more is what the normalized name for the area is.

you could argue it either way it just pertains to your perception of nebraska

I think it's more part of the midwest, because according to https://whatstates.org/midwest/ Nebraska is one of only 12 states that are considered part of the midwest (also known as the heartland).

I feel like Nebraska is more a Great Plains state, but is more both of them than anything.

I think Nebraska is both the Great Plains and the Midwest but takes up more of the perceptions, thus the Great Plains a perceptual region. The physical characteristics carry the more open land characteristics than others. It still takes upon the characteristics and location of the Midwest, but doesn’t encompass it as much as the Great Plains

nebraska actually fits into both If you look at a map of the U.S. then you will see that Nebraska appears to be in the very center of the country. While the actual center point of the United States is located in South Dakota.
