Forum 2.12 - Mountain Specialists

3/26/2019

Central Question: Why do mountains require such high levels of specialization for species?

Guiding Thought Question: Find an example of a species that lives at high elevation (that has not already been discussed in class) and explain why it is so well adapted to mountain living.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will be looking at the uniqueness of Mountain ecoregions and the species who have specialized to those particular regions by examining species who have adapted, and designing a tour of mountain ecoregions and explaining why they require such specialization.

Forum 2.11 - Desirable or Not

3/24/2019

Central Question: Why might life in high altitudes be so difficult for plants and animals?

Guiding Thought Question: Come up with one reasons why mountains might be an attractive place to live, and one reason why living near them may not be as desirable.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will go over the differing ecosystems associated with the alpine biomes, and their locations, and then examine what adaptation species who live in those areas have in order to better survive there.

Central Question: How do changes at the earth's polar regions have an effect on other parts of the planet?

Guiding Thought Question: Develop a reason why people should pay attention to the environmental changes in the Arctic and Antarctic, and why they should care.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine specific ecological issues related to the arctic and Antarctic and further examine how they can have a wider impact on other parts of the planet.

Forum 2.9 - Recapping Bergmann and Allen

3/7/2019

Central Question: What special adaptations have species in the polar regions made to survive in their harsh environments?

Guiding Thought Question: Based on the ideas your own ideas and those of Bergmann and Allen (Notes from day 1.6) what types of common characteristics would you expect for plants and animals at the polar regions? (2 characteristics for plants, 2 for animals)

Today's Learning Objective: Students will analyze arctic animals for their similarities and differences based on their polar locations (comparing southern and northern animals) and test those comparisons against Bergmann and Allen's observations.

Forum 2.7 - Build a Case

3/5/2019

Central Question: Why are the coastal regions of the planet particularly in danger?

Guiding Thought Question: Build a strong argument for why people here in Nebraska should be especially worried about protecting the earth's wild places, even the ones they might not regularly interact with like the coasts.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine the needs of a particular ecosystem by finding out the information the zoo already has regarding them, and then doing further research to find out more for themselves.
