Forum 1.7 - Act Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

1/31/2019

Central Question: Why is an understanding of human forces necessary in ecology?

Guiding Thought Question: In terms of trying to protect and restore biological areas is it better to have humans actively involved in the process or to have the environment correct itself naturally? At What point should humans get involved?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will discuss the factors that influence the extinction of species as connected to the increase in global warming and look at how humans can have positive and negative effects on the environment.

Central Question: What is the relationship between species characteristics and physical location?

Guiding Thought Question: What is a particular physical characteristic that would be advantageous for a plant or animal to have to live in the landscape above? Why would that characteristic be beneficial for that species in order to help it survive?

Today's Learning Objective:
Students will examine the connections that animals have with their physical location and how those can be grouped with species from the same area. Students will examine two rules of ecogeography and then test them to analyze how applicable they are to real-world situations.

Forum 1.5 - Ecological Considerations

1/24/2019

Central Question: What are symptoms of ecological imbalances and how are humans involved?

Guiding Thought Question:
Work with a partner to come up with a list of 5 ways that you could track whether or not a particular ecosystem is "healthy."

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine the components of ecological study and the factors that go into ecological "health" and then read an article about the potential impacts resulting from an imbalance.

Forum 1.4 - Where did it go?

1/15/2019

Central Question: What factors lead to the change in biomes and what impact does that have on distribution?

Guiding Thought Question: Take a look at the satellite imagery of the Aral sea to the right. The left side shows the Aral Sea as it was in 1989, the right side shows it in 2014. Theorize what could have possibly happened that would have caused it to undergo such a drastic change between 1989 and 2014.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will investigate the ecological effects of humans on biomes and their locations by completing an inquiry based investigation of the North American Prairies and then taking notes on some of the geographic human and natural factors.

Central Question: How can you learn about a place through the processes of observation?

Guiding Thought Question: What are three characteristics (could be human or natural) that are unique to Nebraska or used as a way of building an identity as connected to the area where Nebraskans live?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine the Five Themes of Geography and how they can be used to characterize a place, and then practice their observation skills by identifying applications of the five themes in a field environment.

Forum 1.2 - Why is all this Necessary

1/3/2019

Central Question: How is the world subdivided and how were those markers decided?

Guiding Thought Question: Why is the knowledge of the location of features necessary when studying any type of geography?

Today's Learning Objective:
Students will be able to identify major features and reference markers around the world and their significance by completing a research based mapping activity and then completing notes on the subject.

Forum 1.1 - A Point on the Map

1/2/2019

Central Question: What is location and how is it connected to place?

Guiding Thought Question: Navigate to the e-survey HERE and fill it out as a way to get to know your fellow classmates.

Today's Learning Objective: Students will work through basic ideas of location and place by working through an activity in which they try to determine an areas actual location based on visual clues. Students will also work through the ideas of absolute location by working with GPS coordinates to look at latitude and longitude.
