Guiding Thought Question:Why is an understanding of the physical landscape necessary to better understand the flora and fauna that inhabit an area? Give an example of a specific animal and how understanding the habitat better helps explain the behavior and physical characteristics of the animal.

Guiding Inquiry: What is a biome and what distinguishes one from another?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will be able to distinguish between the specific biomes, on the basis of precipitation and temperature characteristics as well as floral and faunal adaptations - and be able to use these understandings in the development of their unit portfolios. (3.2.a, 3.3.a)

If you can understand the physical characteristics of a place than understanding why a plant or animal is the way it is is much easier. An example of this is mountain goats. Since they live in the mountains their hooves are flexible and move easy, making climb steep walls easier.

If you know the landscape, then you can probably predict what kinds of animals would live there. If you were to take a reef, you could expect the animal to have fins or some way to move through the water efficiently and be suited to eat on algae and other small plants

The biomes are the context for the existence of flora and fauna. Biomes create the specific conditions that determine the adaptations of species.

Understanding a physical landscape also allows us to understand the flora and fauna of the area because its species must have certain adaptations in order to live there. For example, polar bears have thick coats and a higher body fat percentage in order to live in the tundra biome which is extremely cold.

Understanding the biomes helps us to understand the floral and fauna because certain species live in certain biomes (ex. polar bears and the arctic region/glacier vs black bears and deciduous forests)

It is important to understand where animals live because it helps people understand their behavior and their adaptations. For example, if you know where a certain monkey lives then you can understand why it acts and adaptations.

Animal/plant adaptations are dependent on their surroundings so the adaptations a particular species have wouldn't make much sense unless you understand their environment and the reason those adaptations are necessary. An example of this are monkeys. Monkeys have long limbs and fingers which make sense if you realize their environment is mostly trees and they need these types of limbs to climb and eat nuts from trees

Understanding a physical landscape can help people interpret the adaptations of an animal, as well as where an animal might live, or hoe that animal might behave. For example, most crocodiles spend their time in the water. This is because their adaptions allow them to hunt more effectively in water.

understanding physical characteristics is important because species adapt to fit their environment, so a tiger would survive in a tropical rainforest because it has adaptions for that place, but it wouldn’t survive on an icecap because it doesn’t have the adaptions to survive

Knowing the physical landscape of an area can help give reason to the adaptations that animals have. Weaver ants have longer legs in comparison to other ants due to the fact that they live in a tropical forest. The longer legs allow them to climb trees better and make bridges and scaffolding out of themselves.

you need to understand the environment because animals adapt to their environment so it basically tells you why they are the way that they are. An example could be polar bears. There are no plants there only ice. Everything is ice. Therefore they must be big with very thick fur.

I’m on phone see if this works

It helps to know what adaptations may have developed for the wildlife

Understanding physical characteristics is important To understanding the flora and fauna because species live in habitats that best fit their needs and are easier for them to exist in while they also adapt to their habitats physically and behaviorally. For example, in aquatic habitats, there will be species such as fish which have characteristics like gills in order to live under water.

It's important because the physical landscape can tell you why the animals and plants have certain characteristics and adaptations.
Ex Cheetahs have a tan fur coat with spots to blend in with the tall grasses in their environment, and they also have only semi-retractable claws which helps with either running after prey and running away from other predators like lions and such.

It depends on the adaptations of a specific animal like the burrowing owl because if you didn't know that they live in the grassland like area so there adaptations would be to burrow in the sand and dirt to create shelter. the burrowing owl has developed long legs enabling them to sprint during hunting. The owlets can scare away their predators by mimicking the sounds of a rattlesnake.

In order to understand the plants and animals that live there then you need to understand the area they occupy, and how they survive it. Like the remora for instance, which needs to travel long distances for food, and so it has adapted a suction cup for being able to use larger animals to get around long distances
