Forum 2.14 - The Bete Noir of Forests

4/3/2019

Central Question: What are the different forest zones and how do they differ?

Guiding Thought Question: When it comes to forests, why do you think it is that so much of the focus on the tropical rain forest instead of the Mid-Latitude deciduous and coniferous forests?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine the different forest ecoregions and their spatial distribution around the world. Students will examine the issues and formulate an argument why they are worth saving.

Because of the massive biodiversity rainforests have, Many farmers are because they need to feed their familes not for commercial, the soil is different where it is much easier to reforest in a mid-latitude deciduous forest.

1. There are less rainforests than any type of forests
2. Rainforests are more marketable to the masses due to the vibrancy of them
3. overall the intense density of the rainforests are very useful to the world's climate and therefore need to be preserved

Most focus is on the rainforests because they have major biodiversity. This isn’t to say that mid-latitude forests don’t have biodiversity, but rainforests have a lot more.

Because they have cooler animals to a lot more people. In the US a lot of people havn't been to a rainforest so it seems cooler than a forest that you are in and have seen all the time.

Because people don't give a crap about mid latitude forests

It's the love of the ~*exotic*~

Same reason pandas are heavily focused on regarding endangered animals really.

There is more biodiversity so the loss is more noticeable

The world's focus is typically more on rain forests rather than mid-latitude forests because the rain forests holds significant extents of biodiversity that is essential to maintaining cliamte conditions all around the globe. Conserving the rainforests can be easily communicated to draw others into the appeal of conserving the forests.

because tropical rain forests have a wide variety of animals and a lot of people especially in the u.s. would want to see these areas because they have animals and experiences that aren't in the u.s.
