Forum 1.2 - A Pseudo Science?

6/30/2021

Picture
Guiding Thought Question: Come up with your own definitions of psychology and sociology and explain why it might be argued they are pseudosciences compared to fields such as biology or physics.

Pseudoscience: A practice mistakenly thought to be rooted in the scientific method

Guiding Inquiry: How do social scientists go about the process of conduction research and why is observation such an important piece of that?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the importance of observation through conducting a field observation activity and then learning about the different methods used for research in the social sciences while also examining strengths and weaknesses of each method.

Psychology- the study of the brain
Sociology- the study of human nature/ societal stuffs

Because those things are more rooted in truths which are specific to certain situations rather then laws like in other sciences (such as the law of gravity that is always true)

The study of the human mind and why they make decisions, and the other is how they interact with other people. I feel like they are always changing and more fluent with what information is relevant. the other sciences keep the same main information for longer times.

Psychology and sociology might be considered pseudosciences because they aren’t something you can physically see? But then microbiology isn’t really stuff you can see. It might be data based stuff? I don’t know. I think Psychology is the study of how people act and sociology is how societies work. I know those aren’t right but that’s all I got.

Psychology - how the brain interacts with itself & why it responds to stimuli the way it does
Sociology - the study of how people interact with each & the world around them (& why)
It is hard to physically prove pseudosciences, as it is more theoretical, whereas biology & physics can (a lot of the time) be proved with physical evidence.

psychology is the study of the brain on why humans respond how they do and what part the brain responds to what. Sociology is the study of social problems and how humans connect to each other. these two can be mixed up because both do indeed have to do with human development and responses as well as actions we do.

These two can be considered both because for one we can guess what humans will do and how they will respond to certain things but all are different so we can not determine it for sure

Psychology-study of why we do things and why we react to things
Sociology- study of people and how we interact with others and our environment
It might be called a pseudoscience because of its much harder to prove then a physical thing instead of how we act and why we act.

Psychology is the study of the behavior and actions of the mind. Sociology is the study of the relations and actions between people in a society. These may be considered pseudosciences because they may seem like they are the study of how the brain works and the science behind each action.

definition of psychology: the study of the mind
definition of sociology: the study of being social

Because biology or physics are more of the hard sciences, and I would say that they are more foundational sciences then psychology and sociology.

psychology i think its about the brain
sociology the study of animals and people and how they socialize and interact ( society study of)
both because you can study how they do things and you cant completly tell how things will react you can make tests but everything will be diffrent

Psychology is the study of the human brain, and why it does and doesn't do stuff
Sociology is, as the joker would say, the study of society and how we act in it.

It is a mild pseudo science because you can't really prove all of it the way you can prove that stars are made of plasma

Sociology and phycology are the studies of humans and how human behavior impacts ourselves and others. It is a difficult science to quantify and there is a vastness of human thought that makes it difficult to determine things that fit for everyone.

Sociology, I think, is the study of how society effects the human condition. Psychology is the study of how the brain works. I guess these can be seen as psuedoscience becauses it can depend on the person sometimes.

psychology is the study of the brain and sociology is the study of people and other species. they can be related to science because they are the study of something with a lot of facts.

Psyc: study of why we do what we do
Sociology: study of interaction

Both because you are using theories and not so much of the STEM. But it’s still studying the science behind the theories

psychology-the study of the human brain and how it reacts
sociology-the study of society and how it blends together.

no because its hard to prove how the human brain reacts because its almost too hard to understand itself

psychology- Studying brain behavior
sociology- Studying people behavior
They can be argued as pseudosciences because they are a bit subjective of studies and the research is a bit harder to prove whereas in biology and physics you see the results. Also some people dont like the answers they get when they look at their brain and behaviors so they try to devalue it.

The Study of the human mind and finding out way it works the way it does. Sociology is the study of the human society. It might be considered a pseudoscience because it might be hard for people to understand and it is different from the sciences that come to peoples heads like physics.

Psychology is the study of the brain and emotions.
Sociology is the study of how humans interact with each other and the environment.
You can't fully prove everything but you can prove somethings, biology and physics are more based in science whereas psychology and sociology are not.

Psychology- the study of the brain
Sociology- the study of society

They might be considered pseudoscience because they come up with conclusions before they know everything and when something new comes up they just add on or change the conclusion

Psychology is the study of the mind, and sociology is the study of how humans interact with each other.
These sciences have many changing variables, and thus, cannot use the scientific method due to people not being able to control the variables if they do an experiment.

Psychology in the study of the mind and how the mind works. Sociology is the study how people/animals work in groups.

It might be considered not to be sciences because every person is different, so there is no set way to have an absolute correct answer for each individual— there are too many possibilities.

Psychology is the study of the brain, while sociology is the study of human beings interacting with each other. I guess it would have to be because it is harder to prove and get results in these fields

Psychology: the exploration of the human mind and how it functions. Also what the outcomes are to these functions.

Sociology: the study of how societies work; common trends, problems, and how all of this comes together to form a group of people with a complex culture, society, etc. I think this can also be used to describe animal societies.

These may be described as pseudosciences because they are the “mind trying to figure itself out”; it is arguable that they are not rooted in facts while biology and science are more ‘factual’.

Psychology is the scientific study of human minds and behaviors, and Sociology is the study of how humans interact in large groups. I don't think could be considered pseudosciences because it's a lot different than other sciences such as Biology, it's more of a study.
