Forum 1.4 - Working the Front End

Guiding Thought Question: Why does it make sense that a lot of the work in a research study would take place before the actual study or data collection takes place?

Guiding Inquiry: How does the research process in the social sciences compare to the physical sciences?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will discuss the steps of social research and practice them at each stage in order to become more familiar with the inquiry process to the point they are able to utilize the process to conduct research of their own

Nor is experimentation a necessary ingredient of science. While
processes of the very small can be duplicated in the laboratory, we
certainly do not replicate supernovae or epidemics or species formation
or continental drift. Here we need other methods of verification. The
study of large scale social phenomena shares with ecology, evolution,
epidemiology and biogeography the characteristic that the number of
examples of each kind that are available for study is small compared to
the number of relevant kinds of objects that actually exist or are
possible. Therefore replication is not possible. We cannot compare 150
socialist revolutions stratified by the degree of sexism in their societies
to compare outcomes, or 50 isolated continents with and without large
mammals to see how it affects the development of agriculture or the
evolution of birds.

It's cool how they are seeing how it affects everything when they take out certain animals

In order to know what data to collect, one has to know why & specifically what data is to be collected. To answer that, one has to define the goals & objective of the project/problem. In research, once the goal is set, a tentative hypothesis is defined & work is started to formulate how that objective is met. Approaching systematically, the nature of data that needs to be collected is established. Then methods & modes of collecting data outlined. Additionally, with a well-defined research problem you can see earlier what data is relevant, & concentrate your efforts on this data, thus reducing the time & money cost.

There a lot of the time has to be an estimation or guess before the actual experiment takes place. Most studies do not actually require any experiments at all research is the main part of it and it is a great factor in your study to have estimations to make it more diverse and interesting.

To properly understand what the data you’re looking at means, you have to do a LOT of preliminary research. Most research comes before actual study so you understand what you’re studying.

Having the work before the actual research makes sure that the lab is organized and there’s a clear path to follow when conducting the lab. It also gives time to contemplate possible questions or mistakes so that they’re easier to avoid

It makes a lot of of sense that you would have to do research before you actually do a study because if you don't know anything about a topic or process then how are you supposed to know enough to make an accurate hypthosis? You have to be atleast kind of educated about a topic in order to be able to do any kind of research at all. Without a base knowlege you wouldnt even know what to research.

Much of the work involved in a research study takes place before actually putting the study together because there needs to be something that the study is about and previous data. The researcher needs background knowledge on topics and other data involved in the study. All the work taking place in the process of a research study is based off of previous work.

You have a plan of what you are looking for and the outcome that you want. If you go in blind you might miss the information you need/ put down information that is unnecessary.

How does the research process in the social sciences compare to the physical sciences?

In my opinion it's harder to do research in social sciences, because in social sciences there are many more variables then physical science. Also, we are in a way part of the study/research

Need a lot of background knowledge and you need to know what HAS happened before. A lot of planning.

you need to know information about what you are researching and you have to understand your data. you got to know what you are looking for and know what you are looking for.

The difference is that there may not be an actual experiment involved in the process.

A literature review is essential to research. It is important to read about what others have done to find important information that is helpful to the study.

It makes sense to research before hand to see if anyone else has done this project before and to know what you are getting into.

Because you need outside information in order to start the experiment

Because you have to prepare for your work. Like you need outside info for your study to be successful.

Because you need to do research before starting so that you will see what is already known so that you can build upon that knowledge. Also, you need to gain base knowledge to be able to create rules and a hypothesis, as well as just needing knowledge so you know how to do your study.

So you do not do the do the same thing as someone else and so your research is your own. Also you have to have some background information so you know what you are doing.

It takes a lot of time to understand what you're studying and you need to do extensive research to know what you're talking about. If you don't know all the background information, that can affect your study.

I’m guess im gong to say that social science is more of asking other to help your results rather than doing it by yourself. With regular experiments, you’ll have to most of the work by yourself, and your results is mainly what variable you put on the table. While with social science, you are actively relying on others for your work. Your results will depend on the information you receive from the other person.

Researchers must gather information beforehand in order to make sure that an experiment is safe depending on the subjects that the experiment is using.
They also need to do research in order to know the possible effects that the experiment will have on the subjects, such as reactions to distress.

So you have as much information over the topic as you can before you conduct your research, it gives you a feel of what you're getting into.

to form a questions and some expectations such as hypothesis to know what to look for and to account for some complications before hand

So you know what you’re looking for while during the data collection and study. And so you know what you know what your studying hasn’t been already done, or there might be similar studies that help you conduct your own study.

It makes sense because you need to take time before to really understand your topic and prepare for your study
