Forum 1.5 - Differences in Approaches

6/29/2021

Guiding Thought Question: Explain why you will have to use different approaches and codes of conduct when dealing with human subjects compared to the practices you might use with natural research.

Guiding Inquiry: What considerations need to be taken for the safety and reliability of research studies?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will be able to explain the importance of ethics in research design and will complete an activity where they will explain certain elements of ethical research design and evaluate their importance.

you have to use different codes of conduct with humans than you would with natural research because they’re people! so there is a bunch of legal stuff that goes into working with people! there are a bunch of limitations of what you can and cant do when observing people

to elaborate, it’s important to have these legal things because people are people, not objects. so you cant just keep them in a room to watch them or something like you can with a plant, because that’s super unethical

It is important to use different codes of conduct while researching humans verses natural science because many different actions can effect human emotions and reactions and change the results of research.

I agree. If you did an ethogram on a person the person would notice you watching them and their behavior would change because they would get self conscious about why you are watching them.

I agree. To add on, some things that are unethical for humans are ethical for animals, so there needs to be a different code of conduct. Mostly because humans can be identified and need to be confidential.

You’d have to use different approaches when handling humans than nature researching because humans have understandable feelings that may compromise the results if not handled carefully.

Exactly, Humans are aware of what they are doing and are capable of complex thinking- not saying that other animals cant be aware but we have more empathy towards things we understand.

To elaborate, humans have feelings that we can communicate to each other. They can notice you easier when doing your research and can change your results, because they may change their behavior.

Well for starters there is a lot more laws to stop you from doing any experiments you want. There is a lot more lenience for animals. Animals are often used to test products before people can use them.

There's just a lot more ethics when conducting human research rather where it's more lenient with animal research

To further elaborate, there are a lot more laws that protect humans than in animals, such as laws that prevent humans from being used as actual experiments. In addition to this, humans can rebel from being used as experiments, which could make the experiment a failure.

I agree 100%, there's a large difference between animals and humans with laws. Humans aren't being tested for products animals need to use, so animal testing is a very good example for this situation.

Because humans can sue. Also they are much smarter and can change how they naturally act really easily.

Humans don't like to be watched all the time. Humans are also very sensitive animals and they are very protective of there private lives. And humans can pay for lawyers!

It is important to have a different code of conduct when you are working with humans because you have to consider both their emotions and privacy as you conduct your research as well as how thus may affect your research. You also can not harm vertebrates (sometimes) :(

I agree with what you said. A lot goes into studying humans because you have to consider their thoughts and you have to make sure not to intentionaly traumitize them.

I agree, we don't want to traumatize people so we have to be a lot more careful. Humans think a lot more than other animals do. They can also sue you.

You have to use different approaches and techniques when dealing with human subjects because they have choices whether you can use them or not and the human mind is much more complicated than animals'. The science behind predicting peoples choices or decisions is undetermined. Humans have much more of an opinion than animals or live organisms so you do have to follow their limits and cant research just your own way.

Yeah I can see that, you can’t really research them if they refuse in the first place.

people can sue and animals are normally used to study so they cant do the things that people will do. People have voices and feelings and that could go down hill if they think something is wrong, more restrictions on people than animals, like testing on animals

^ With animals you don't need their permission to conduct the experiment, but with humans you do or you have to tell them it was an experiment after.

Explain why you will have to use different approaches and codes of conduct when dealing with human subjects compared to the practices you might use with natural research.

Using the same approaches for research on people and natural things would make the research experiment flawed. For example, if you tell people that you are researching what they are doing, then the people will most likely start acting differently.

So when it come to research people and animals, people can be quite a bit more complicated to work with since are emotions and reactions can be severely different than another person, which might mess up the results

You have to use different codes of conduct for humans because we are living things with a conscious minds who can be damaged/traumatized mentally and emotionally.

You'll have to use different approaches on humans because of different reactions and emotions. Natural research doesn't have much laws and regulations to follow. Humans have set laws they can't go against unless they want extreme consequences.

With humans you need to be careful about feelings and how it will affect people but with natural science you don’t have to be as cautious about things so it can be easier to get more information
