It is purposeful because if you are interested in researching or studying a certain animal or subject you have to know what people have already studied.

It can feed into your curiosity. Research can just be done for fun. You can get information on something without it being important to anything else.

The purpose of doing research beyond the point of increasing your knowledge is to help answer questions of people as well as contribute to greater causes that your research can add to. Also to do work as a form of enjoyment.

I don’t think that it is possible to do research without gaining knowledge
(unless your research was a dud)
But as for a purpose behind research besides increasing knowledge, research and knowledge can help with general welfare, increasing the quality of our everyday lives, make advancements in technology, and just advancements in general.

The purpose of research is to help be able to explain your process to people and be able to ask all questions to people. It also helps you find information from other researchers to help you with your research and expanding it
