Guiding Thought Question: How do you get yourself to do something you need to when you're not really motivated to? How might you have utilized rewards or just internal encouragement?

Guiding Inquiry: What is motivation, and what impact can it have in driving people to do what they do?

Today's Learning Objective: Students will learn about the ideas of drive and motivation, and be able to use principles about them in the development of their end of unit assessment

It depends on how arduous the task is. If its something relatively easy like homework, I turn on music and just kind of force myself to do it. If it’s something more overwhelming I try to take breaks and look forward to those breaks. Jury’s still out on if that’s working!

When I don’t want to something, I think about what I will be able to do once this thing is finished. Planning ahead to “reward” myself with something I can look forward makes me want to get something done as soon as possible, rather than wasting time dwelling on the fact that I have to do the dreaded activity.

I tell myself that once it’s done it’s done and I don’t need to think about it anymore. And I think that’s a prize and internal encouragement

I bribe myself to do the thing. Usually with breaks from doing the thing or multitasking while doing the thing. Bribing myself is a kind of reward.

I tell myself ‘you need to do this or you’ll not get money in the future and you’ll be broke and never travel’ and hope that’s good enough.

You have to find a good reason/motivation to do it, such as a reward for when you're done, or to help fulfill a long term goal.

I have to be someone else or facetime someone to keep me motivated so I can be yelled at to get my work done. I also never want to do anything when my ADHD is bad so I always have to find different ways to stay motivated for more than 2 minutes lol

I like to keep to a schedule so I get home from school, eat a snack, relax until 4:30, clean my room, start my homework at 4:40 and work on homework until 5:30. Keeping to a schedule keeps me motivated to get my school work done. But ice cream really motivates me.

When I am not motivated to do something I try to think of the end product and how it will help me in the future. I try to tell myself that it will help me in the end result.

I always work for a certain amount of time then give myself a certain amount of time or a brain break. I also tell myself that I would fail with out doing what I have to do.

I just do it cause otherwise I get stressed and I think about how I feel when its done. There is internal encouragement because I want it done so that I am less stressed.

I normally start by doing something I enjoy doing. In school, i love taking notes so I will retake or work ahead on notes then transition to the assignment.

I usually push it off til the last minute, and then do it. Unless its something that i actually want to do or have an interest. Sometimes I try to divide it up and do certain sections at certain times. Im also scared of failing so, that works too.

I usually just procrastinate and then when I feel like there's nothing else to do I do it. For every 5 min I get to go on my phone

When I don’t want to do something I need to, I evaluate the consequences and force myself to try accordingly. Just like how I evaluated the consequences of not fixing my name and concluded that they are minute and decided against changing it.

I get kinda mad and then I just do the homework. I don’t know why it works but I guess being angry at the fact I have homework motivates me to get it done as fast as possible.

I tend to switch between doing something I like and what I'm trying to motivate myself to do. Sometimes I will have certain snacks or rewards for myself if I complete something.

When I have to do a project I'm not really motivated about, I usually force myself to do it or I get really stressed about it. Plus, being stressed about failing my classes also makes for a good motivator.

I usually don't clean my room or do anything until i get my work done and that motivates me because after a shower and cleaning my room it gives me time to relax. If i don't get those things done i can't relax.
