Guiding Inquiry: Why are appropriate discussions about mental illness and mental disorders needed, and how can we help others?

Today's Learning Objective

I think its a good time to step in when they are harming themselves because of it. And even then you still need to be careful to not push them away more.

Because many times in people’s homes it is not discussed and maybe even oppressed as the family tell them to hold it in

I think when they are in danger of hurting themselves or others or when it is heavily effecting their life not letting them do things people can normally do

When they start showing signs of not being themselves. Once they show outward signs of internal issues, you can assume it’s worse in private

It is important to insist on them to seek help when their mental health is reaching or is at a dangerous level for their safety. It may also be important for them to seek help earlier but you do not want to interfere or invade their personal lives

It is important to step in if anyone is every jokingly saying they want to hurt themselves or end their life because you don't know when their joking or not. You should talk to the person first if you are close, depending on how they respond you should talk to a counselor or teacher right away if you are suspecting self harm

It is good to step in when an individual could potentially hurt themselves or others or not taking care of their basic needs

I think it is important to step in when people might hurt themselves or others. It depends on the person and their situation.

It's important to talk about mental health so we can destigmatize them so that people feel more comfortable asking for help. The best way to help someone with a mental illness is to learn about it and be patient with them, however don't treat them differently or like children because of it.

Answered wrong question:

You should step in either when they have obviously asked for help, when they are going to hurt themselves, or just making tiny check ins every now and then helps more than people think.

When you are starting to worry they will harm themselves or others. Or if they are showing no signs of getting better or trying to get better

When they are being harmful to themselves or others. This can lead to be dangerous if they cannot get help.

If they start saying things like "everyone's life would be better without me here" or just showing multiple signs of depression.

I think it's time to step in when the possibility of harm or death comes into thought. Or even when the thoughts are just harmful to the person's mental health/stability - it can further cause harm to the physical state of person or other people.

You can notice when others aren't acting the same. So id say when you notice those differences in behaviors such as them talking about death, or noticing self harm. Stepping in before this can help them out by not making themselves feel as if they need to take these actions.
