Guiding Thought Question: How does the idea of Group Think help explain why extremist views are able to gain hold in society, despite people having moral objections to their viewpoints? Guiding Inquiry: How can the psychological ideas of conformity affect social order? Today's Learning Objective: Students will examine the ways in which social norms are affected by psychological concepts of conformity and how that dictates societal directions by examining conformal norms in their own experiences. |

people are more inclined to agree with a group due to social pressures, which allows extremist ideas to flourish because people are pressured to agree with them. it’s kind of like mob mentality. people want to be a part of a group, even if that sacrifices their personal morals

Since people don't' want to feel like they are wrong or not "in the group" people tend to just agree with the views of everyone else around them. This ends up with super extreme views becoming more mainstream simply because people both don't do their own research but just go along with what other people around them are doing. There is extra pressure with this when it is your family that agrees with these extremist views.

The pursuit of power can be very strong. They may see that following this extremist view can give them authority over others and make them feel stronger just for being part of a group and not part of another. If they join a group they wouldn’t be the odd one out

People conform to others through pressure in groupthink which allows extremist views to be more widely accepted and have a stronger influence on more people

Most don’t want to be by themselves, so they conform to another’s belief/idea to feel I’m place. Extremists could have an impact on peoples behavior with group thinking because they have already been outcasted by everyone else and the group would accept them if they only submit to the ideologies

Because if you answer differently then everyone else you have the fear of being an outcast and you think that the more common answer is more right then your personal answer.

so in the video it says about how she stands up because everyone else does so people will do things over and over again and others will start to do it because they might feel like they have to do it and everyone is trying to fit in so they take the leads of others, they agree with other peoples trends so they dont stand out.

people are most likely to agree in a group because if they disagree and are the only ones to disagree they might feel stupid

Humans are pack animals, and no one wants to get cast out of the pack. because the human without a pack today is the skeleton being picked clean by vultures tomorrow. We're designed to seek out social groups who accept us, and are sometimes willing to change our views to accept that

If there is a large group of people all agreeing with one thing, even if you hate it, it can be quite hard to disagree. Especially when there are so many people in your community or people you respect saying it’s correct, it’s hard to disagree.

Its hard to disagree and stand with your own beliefs if the majority is *consistently* arguing with you

There is a mob mentality and in the play we are reading in English people outcast a man for having a different view on pollution. Not everyone in the crowd disagreed with the doctor but the vote to make him enemy of the people was unanimous.

You don't want to disagree with people, or not do what the group is doing because then you'll be viewed as weird and judged and no one wants that. So people tend to agree with the majority to fit in and when the majority is one view you tend to believe in it.

If someone sees someone else doing something and more and more people joining, to avoid feeling left out they will join. Having a different ideal than everyone else makes you feel like an outcast.

Because once they see one person doing it they confirm it in their brain that they should do it too because it's socially acceptable to them now

if an ubsurd concept with zero purpose or connection to anything can pass as a social norm, then things that can have false connections will go compleatly awry

The idea helps to show that by using peer pressure and "going with the flow", people will eventually conform to the group's norms despite the group doing bad things.

The extremist views become the social norm, so when it becomes common practice for society, it is easy to conform because its considered "normal". And if you don't conform, you feel excluded.

If someone sticks out of a group, they will slowly start trying to fit in with them and doing what they do. In order to not be judged or looked at a certain way.
